In Hong Kong, a tense calm has descended and a clean-up operation is underway to remove debris left over from the violence that engulfed parts of the city. It came after protesters stormed and ransacked the Legislative Council building on the anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to Chinese rule. Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who protested against planned legislation that would allow extraditions to China. Beijing has called the protest an 'undisguised challenge' to Chinese rule. Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam has criticized the violence and called for society to return to normal as soon as possible.
