( ) The new Golf R is powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder EA888 TSI® engine, good for 290 horsepower and 280 lb/ft of torque. That's a gain of 34 hp and 37 lb/ft from the outgoing model. Power goes to the permanent 4MOTION all wheel drive system via a six-speed manual or DSG transmission. The manual will scoot you to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, the DSG is just a bit quicker at 4.9 seconds. Volkswagen estimates a highway fuel economy of 31 mpg with the manual transmission, an improvement from the last generation's 27 mpg.
