Asian carp are among the most destructive invasive species in North America, rapidly advancing up rivers like the Illinois, outcompeting native fish, and causing chaos by leaping up to three meters when startled—sometimes injuring boaters in the process. With the threat of these 100-pound fish reaching the Great Lakes, U.S. and Canadian task forces are working hard to stop them. We follow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their search for carp near Lake Michigan, and visit the Hammond Bay Biological Station, where researchers combat another invasive menace: the sea lamprey—jawless predators lured and repelled using experimental pheromones.
