The United States is known for its extreme weather, from blizzards to hurricanes and everything in between. But perhaps no weather phenomenon in America is as terrifying as the tornado, with hundreds of high-speed twisters every year destroying property and taking lives in the blink of an eye.

Amazingly, there was a time where weathermen weren't even allowed to use the word tornado, as the National Weather Service was afraid of causing a panic. But this backfired tragically in 1925 when the Tri-State tornado hit cities and towns filled with people who in some cases didn't even know what a tornado was. More than 600 people died and thousands were injured and left homeless.

This is the deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
