In the desert of Southern California a young male burrowing owl scratches out a living. He spends much of the day searching for grubs in the dust, while keeping constant look out. Danger can come from land and air. Coyotes and raptors patrol the arid scrubland. As a result, he never strays too far from the safety of his burrow, which may be one he’s dug himself or an abandoned one he’s taken over from an armadillo. Before long, the urge to mate forces him to seek company. He cries out across the desert. Eventually, he hears a faint response. The female’s call lures him as he searches for this potential mate.
