Each winter, elephant seals migrate thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean to the coast of California. Here the enormous males haul out to stake their territorial claim to the beaches. Brutal fights for dominance leave them bloody and scarred. But it’s worth it. Soon the females will arrive to give birth and mate again, and each male will claim all those who settle on his patch of sand. The beachmaster commands the largest harem but he must fight to defend it. When a younger bachelor arrives to challenge him, the beachmaster lunges into action. He has no tolerance for this interloper. But the two males seem evenly matched. There may be a new beachmaster to claim the crown.
