Stephen R. Palumbi is a professor of marine sciences and the director of Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey Bay, California. He has used genetic detective work to identify whales for sale in retail market , and is genetically mapping corals resistant to climate change. His latest book for nonscientists is about the amazing species in the sea, written with his son and novelist Anthony Palumbi. THE EXTREME LIFE OF THE SEA focuses on the fastest, hottest, coldest and "oldest" species in the sea. Palumbi also started the video production company Short Attention Span Science Theatre and appears in many films and TV series about the sea.
