Stanford's former dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising, Julie Lythcott- Haims, '89, left academia to follow her passion for writing. Her play, A DAY AT THE RACES, tells her story of biracial identity formation in a culturally white landscape. Directed by Brandon Jackson, '12, the play debuted in 2013 at San Francisco's Poets Theater, a venue for avant-garde flash theater. Lythcott-Haims based the play on her poem of the same name, which was published in "As Us: A Literary Space for Women of the World" in 2013. Jackson's recent directing credits include Cabaret (Broadway by the Bay), The Mountaintop and Once on This Island (assistant director, TheatreWorks).
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
