Every since I began doing this series Real or Fake, people have been telling me about a fish that likes to bite human testicles. That’s right, a ball biting, monster of a fish from the Amazon known as a Pacu!
But is this really true? Is there a fish who will bite off men’s family jewels, or is this just some Joke. That is the question today.
I decided to start my hunt with a simple google search on Pacu to see what turned up.
It was an avalanche of stories about these testicle eating fish being caught all over the world. From Lake Michigan in the United States to Denmark and even Russia, there was no shortage of stories about people catching this fish. Even River Monster host Jeremy Wade was into it.
Oddly enough, there were no stories of anyone actually losing their gonads to a fish… so I decided to take a closer look at the Pacu itself.
It turns out Pacu are a distant cousin to the Piranha and usually reside in South America’s amazon region. A full-grown pacu are much larger than piranha, reaching up to about 1 meter (3 feet) and 25 kg (55 pounds). But the Pacu doesn’t have the sharp menacing teeth of Piranha - instead it has what look like human molar teeth...
Another huge difference is Pacu. unlike Piranha, are not meat eaters! They are vegetarians!
Well that doesn’t sound much like a hungry monster that wants to eat my nuts?????
I haven’t seen a Pacu in person myself, but I have seen the Morocoto, which is basically the same fish in Venezuela. My friend and Fishing Professional Steve Townsend caught one and showed it to me.
According to Steve, the Pacu is a nut eater, but it eats nuts from trees that grow along the banks of the rivers where the Pacu swim. The Pacu eat those nuts but they don't eat human testicles.
