After completing an introductory-level college course, what should students know or be able to do? As the Director of the newly established Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of New Mexico, Dr. Aeron Haynie believes that instead of being able to recite a collection of facts from a certain field, students should learn how to see the world through different disciplines. General education courses in history, English, or biology should teach undergraduates how to see the world as historians, literary scholars, and biologists. They should introduce students to the moves of the discipline, not just the facts.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
