Becca Holmes has been guiding K-12 students through the process of creating, developing, and producing their own operas since 2006 with Active Learning through Opera (ALTO) at The Santa Fe Opera. During her first visit to Los Puentes Charter High School in Albuquerque, she was shocked to find that many of the students and the school as a whole regularly struggled with gang violence, abuse, neglect, and drug addiction. Becca saw an incredible opportunity to help students overcome the challenges in their lives through personal expression, creativity, and teamwork within the structure of ALTO. Despite initial trepidations from the whole school, the Los Puentes Opera Project is now in its seventh year and boasts overwhelming support from both students and staff. Becca represents The Santa Fe Opera in the Kennedy Center's Partners in Education program.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
