Police in Sri Lanka say the death toll from the devastating wave of bombings on Easter Sunday has risen sharply to at least 290. Around 500 people were also injured in the coordinated attacks that targeted churches, where worshippers had gathered for Easter services, and luxury hotels. Most of the dead were Sri Lankans, but 32 came from around the world. The attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. No group has claimed responsibility so far, but the government is blaming religious extremists.
