In part 1 we visit 5 great places to eat in Colombo, look at local spices, make a fantastic chicken curry, look at King Coconut, take a trip to a local market and make both Pol Sambol and Devilled Prawns. Colombo is the urban economic capital of this blessed nation and is where we will start our journey into its food. If you are looking for 5 star high end eateries, then this is not for you. But if you are on quest for great food and happy to dig in a little deeper then you are in the right place. I am joined by my good friend Arqam, a local with a nose for good food who is going to take us to 5 spots in Colombo he thinks are worth a look. Lets Go. So we are heading South out of Colombo and taking the coast road to find some of the best beaches for both relaxing and water sports in the country. Lets get moving. Once out of the city traffic the highway heading towards Galle is new and fast, you could always take the train, which is pretty much a “must do” They are slower, incredibly cheap and you will get to see Sri Lanka from a different point of view. Probably the best train journey is from the central town of Kandy to Ella, this is truly a magnificent train ride. On the way and everyday in fact you are in Sri Lanka, you should be stopping road side and buying King Coconut. This is truly one of the most refreshing drinks ever. Cheap, cooling and good for you. And while we are on this subject, Bananas, Small bites sized sweet tubes of goodness. This is base camp for the next week, not too shabby at all. We are right on the beach, we have a garden, BBQ and a bit of WiFi, Happy Days. Before we start eating lets just have have a little overview on Sri Lankan food and key ingridents …. Coconut milk, curry powder light and roasted curry powder, cinnamon,rampa/pandam, curry leaves,cloves,mustard seeds, goraka, fenugreek, fish, crabs, squid, lobster,chicken….pork and beef but not a lot of lamb, goat is on the menu though.
