Cannibalism in the snake world is not uncommon. Cobras and other snakes feed frequently on its own species or other snakes and smaller reptiles in general. Yet constrictors such us the invasive Burmese Pythons don’t seem to prey on its own kind but still cannibalism happens from time to time. Mostly due to some sort of food fight as it can be seen in this video, in which a larger python preys on a smaller python, which just caught a rat. The larger python kills its opponent through asphyxiation before swallowing both animals. This feeding sequence lasted for more than three hours.
Burmese pythons are apex predators of the Everglades today. An adult snake can grow to nearly 20 ft., and eats everything from rats, rabbits, bobcats, deers and even small alligators. Pythons kill by constriction and then swallowing its prey whole. When two pythons fight over food in this video, the larger python will overpower its smaller opponent and turn cannibalistic by killing and feeding on the dead python too.
Python Cannibalism was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in Florida in 2014.
