How does a world-renowned cellist open a TEDx conference entitled re:THINK? By rocking the house and rattling some nerves.

Just off her record-setting tour as a featured artist in Circque du Soleil's "Immortal" show, Tina Guo arrived at TEDx San Diego with two very different cellos and musical statements. Clad in delicate chiffon, she opened the day of re:THINKing with a stunning rendition of Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 Prelude, played on her traditional cello. A lovely, but fairly staid affair. Was that supposed to kick us into re:THINKING mode? Wait...

After a few opening remarks by the host, behold...Tina re-emerged in torn black leather, gripped her custom electric cello and rips into a Metallica-meets-Hendrix-inspired rendition of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee.

Chest-thumping drums and crackling guitar accompany the artist, whose cello now channels Led Zeppelin with distortion, feedback, and wah-wah effects. The audience's energy is pushed toward the red line. Was Rimsky-Korsakov's piece from 1899 actually the birth of rock 'n' roll? Re:THINK about it after watching this performance.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
