Watch the raw video on Ryan Carpenters channel.
Hey guys Bill here. The ocean is filled with all sorts of strange creatures, but just the other day, billschannel viewer Sam O’Neil sent me a video showing something I have never seen or heard of before…
It was first posted on the newsflare website and claimed it showed a group of divers swimming with a translucent worm-like sea creature off the coast of Ticao Island in the Philippines.
Now what Sam wants to know, is… Is this video for real? Or is yet one more ocean going hoax.
Well Sam, why don’t we just dive in and see what we can find out.
The first thing I did was go through the video again — The video is 41 seconds long and shows three divers (plus the one with the camera) just treading water around this strange looking tube. The divers hang around for awhile looking at it, then there is a dissolves to another shot of it it where it mysteriously changes color! w
I couldn’t find anything about this video on Snopes, or my other myth busting websites, but I did drill down on the description posted on Newsfare. It said “We encountered this translucent "worm" in the Philippines off Ticao Island. Not even the dive master had seen one before, but we later identified it as a colony of tiny animals called tunicates. When they join together like this, they're called a pyrosome.”
A pyrosome? What the heck is that?
Turns out there really is a sea creature called a pyrosome. it’s a rarely seen, but there are a few photos around. Some people refer to it as the “corn cob jellyfish.”
I couldn’t really make sense out of the scientific description of the this mysterious life form, but I did discover the same video was posted on Youtube. But in this case, it was called “Diving with Squid Egg Mass.”
Pyrosome? Squid Egg Mass? What the heck is going on here? I’m starting to smell a hoax, aren’t you?
The Youtube channel that posted the video belonged to a guy called Ryan Carpenter. Ryan makes it clear in the description that he is the man who recorded the video… So on the hunch, I decided to get in touch with Ryan and see if he was for real…
RYAN: I’m the real ryan carpenter and this is a real video.
Ryan wasn’t able to show me any I.D. but he did have a well establish Google+ page so I had no reason to not believe him.
RYAN: we took a vacation in the philippines and came across this creature. It didn’t scare us but we didn’t know what it was.
BILL VO: What he was telling me sounded pretty legit so I asked him if he could clear up a few things for me.
BILL SOT: WHY THE PHOTOSHOP LOOK?
BILL VO: The other thing about the video that makes me suspicious is that it changes color.
RYAN: It floated up toward the surface and changes colors.
BILL VO: The last thing I wanted to know was why the description of the creature changed over time.
RYAN: That’s the nice thing about the internet. when I didn’t know what it was, I uploaded it and asked what they see. Some people who were scuba divers described it as a pyrosome, but then a PHD said it was a squid egg mass.
That PHD candidate turns out to be a marine biologist named Rebecca Helm. Now Rebecca wrote an article of her own Deep Sea News about all this. And in that article, she does a detailed analysis of the video and comes to the conclusion it is a Squid Egg Mass. She wrote she believes it is one of the best videos ever of the phenomena.
BILL STAND UP: Okay, well, I guess it’s time to make a decision about this video. But first let’s go over what we have learned so far.
Ryan Carpenter is the man who shot the video.
There are known creatures that look like what he recorded
The creature changed color because it changed depth
He changed the description as he learned more about the creature.
Okay so based on all the evidence I have gather so far, I am judging the video to be… and you might have guessed already… to be… hold second…
REAL!
And that my friends brings me to the question of the day. Did Ryan convince you that the video is real? Or do you still think this is a hoax of some kind. let me know what YOUR opinion is in the comment section below.
