In a spirited speech at the Munich Security Conference 2019, German Chancellor stood as a beacon in the struggle for multilateralism and the survival of NATO. Casting gentle shade on US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Merkel argued that the rising rivalry between the world's great powers cannot be allowed to escalate into a new Cold War. She also spoke in favor of Germany's controversial Nord Stream gas deal with Russia and called on the world to share the challenges refugees and climate change present to international security.
