MAMA DOG ADOPTS BABY CHIMP - real or fake?

You guys send me pictures of dogs all the time -especially really big ones. But when this picture came in, I really had to find out what this is all about.
The picture was sent in by Jordon Ferrella, and claims to show a Baby Chimp that has been adopted by a mama Mastiff.

I always knew Mastiff were considered pretty gentle… but is this picture for real, or are we just looking at another big fat fake… That’s what Jordon wants to know.
Looking around on the internet, I did bump into a lot of interspecies type stuff… but I didn’t see anything like this. I began to suspect it was two pictures one of a chimp and one of a dog that has been photoshopped together, so I decided to just look for the baby chimp without the dog…
And that let to this the official answer:
"Our examination of this photo is complete. While on the surface, the picture shows little sign of being a composite, it defies logic to think this situation could really exist as dogs, for the most part are afraid of primates and stay away from them. At this point, however, we must base our final decision on facts, and all the facts point to this being … a real photo and real claim.
As it turns out there are numerous news reports about this dog adopts Chimp story. It happened at a Russian Zoo where the chimp didn’t seem to bond with it’s own mother. A zoo worker took it home where her Mastiff had just delivered a litter of puppies and just adopted the chimp like it was one of her own.
This actually happened a few years ago, so I wonder how things turned out. I mean what happens when that chimp gets older a realized his bark isn’t as good as it should be…
