German Chancellor Angela Merkel's governing coalition of conservatives and Social Democrats were dealt their worst showing in EU election history. They lost European Parliamentary seats amid big gains made by the Greens, who have been buoyed by environmental concerns. Meanwhile Germany's far-right AfD managed to break the 10 percent barrier. After the vote, its leader, Alexander Gauland, attacked the Greens, saying they were now the AfD's main opponent in Europe as well as in Germany.
