Germany and France have signed a new treaty aimed at deepening cooperation between their two nations. Chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Emmanuel Macron put their names to the pact at a ceremony in the west German city of Aachen. Under the agreement the two countries will step up cooperation in areas including security and foreign policy. Merkel said such ties were vital - especially at a time when populists were gaining strength in Europe. Both leaders also said they hoped the pact would reinvigorate the EU.
