Joshua Bacigalupi is a public school educator currently serving as an Assistant Principal for a large elementary school in a rural district in Central New York. Joshua started his teaching career in 1998 with Fairfax County Public Schools in the Washington, DC area after graduating from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Joshua also taught at an American School in Bogota, Colombia, for two years. In 2005, Joshua and his wife moved to Central New York where he continued to teach in local public schools at the elementary level. Joshua earned his Master's in Education from the University of Mary Washington in 2005 and a C.A.S. in School Building and District Leadership from SUNY Cortland in 2013.
After the 9/11 attacks, Joshua enlisted in the Army National Guard, a reserve component of the United States Army. In January 2008, he was deployed with his unit to Afghanistan. While conducting combat operations he earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Army Commendation Medal. Joshua's domestic experiences with poverty in the education setting coupled with his experiences with poverty abroad has helped him focus his work on building relationships with students and families in order to help break the cycle of multigenerational poverty in the education setting. Joshua spoke at the first ever TEDxCortland, held November 9th, 2013, at Greek Peak Mountain Resort in Cortland, NY.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
