About a quarter of the global pig population is expected to die as a result of an epidemic of African swine fever, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health. Farmers on nearly every continent have had to cope with swine flu for over a year now. Denmark has put up fences along its border meant to keep wild boars out. Meanwhile, many Asian countries are implementing stricter hygiene controls. Hardest hit is China, where pork prices are already soaring. Many Chinese eat pork nearly every day. The virus is harmless to humans, but has decimated China's livestock herds. Some 200 million pigs have already died due to the disease, about 40 percent of all stocks.
