In the heart of Southern Africa lives a spotted hyena called Mizumu, which means spirit. At two and a half years old, he’s an adolescent. And like all teenagers, he’s spending more and more time away from home. In this female-dominated society, there’s a strict pecking order. The alpha female eats first alongside her daughters. As her son, Mizumu also feeds, under her protection. Lower-status females have to wait. Mizumu gets a good meal, but the adult males don’t get a scrap. They rank lowest in the clan, beneath all the females.
