It's been 17 years since the U.S. government began imprisoning hundreds of Muslim men and boys, without charge, on a strip of land leased from the government of Cuba. The prison, known as the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, would become one of the lasting legacies of the so-called “War on Terror” – encompassing arbitrary detention, the approval of torture from the highest levels of government and the specific targeting of Muslim males. The overwhelming majority of those held in Guantanamo were never charged with a single crime. Their dossier profiles – which are publicly available via WikiLeaks – were obtained through bribed informants. Close to two decades after Guantanamo began filling up, there has yet to be justice and accountability for what happened there – and what continues to happen.
