The word "scapegoat" comes from Leviticus in the Old Testament, referring to a goat who was sent into the wilderness with the community's sins on its back, metaphorically-speaking. In the ritual, another goat gets sacrificed, while the scapegoat is forced to wander the desert with its heavy symbolic burden.
