"Hell" has become a concept that transcends culture and religion. Everyone has a picture that pops into their heads when they hear the word, and some groups have very specific ideas about what hell might be, and who will go on to populate it. However, the idea about what hell may be, even as a metaphor, has evolved greatly over the centuries.
