“I am smelling the flowers” is a correct sentence, but “The flowers are smelling nice” is an incorrect sentence. This is because ‘smell’ can be both a dynamic verb and a linking verb. Linking verbs are a type of unique stative verb that you will learn about in today’s English lesson.

What is a Linking Verb?: A linking verb is a kind of stative verb which describes a state of being rather than a physical action. (This idea can also be known as copula in English grammar). We use linking verbs to link the subject of a sentence with an adjective that helps to describe the subject. For example, the be verb ‘am’ in the sentence ‘I am happy’ is a linking verb which helps to link the subject ‘I’ with the adjective ‘happy’.

The ‘be’ verb is the most common linking verb, however there are several others in English. This lesson will introduce you to several other examples of linking verbs and how linking verbs are used in sentences.

A very important point about linking verbs is that they can never be put in the progressive form. This means that linking verbs will never have -ing added to the ends of them. The verb ’tasting’ in the sentence “I am tasting the apple”, is an action verb and is being used in the present continuous to describe my action. However, the verb ‘taste’ in the sentence “The apple tastes sweet’ is a linking verb which is being used to link the subject of the apple with the adjective ‘sweet’. Due to the fact that it is being used as a linking verb, it is impossible to add -ing to the end of the verb or to put the sentence into the progressive form. This English grammar lesson will compare several sentences using linking verbs vs action verbs.
