The EU Parliament has elected Germany's Ursula von der Leyen as the next President of the European Union. Of 733 votes, she needed at least 374 and managed to squeak by with 383. Many were skeptical that she would be able to win over the Social Democrats and the Liberals, but her speech managed to convince enough of them to vote for her to push her over the finish line without having to rely on far right MEPs.
