Every year, Best Friends looks for new and innovative ways to reduce the killing of pets in our nation's shelters. One program we recently created in both Los Angeles and Salt Lake City is designed to save some of the most vulnerable — the thousands of kittens under eight weeks old who die in shelters every year ... kittens who are too young to find homes and need 24-hour care. Best Friends kitten nursery program is already making a huge impact in our community, and we're always looking for dedicated volunteers to help Save Them All.
The new Best Friends Neonatal Kitten Nursery in Salt Lake City is scheduled to open in March 2014 and the kick-off will take place Saturday, March 22nd. The Kitten Nursery will rely on a team of 500 volunteers to provide round-the-clock care for kittens under 2 months of age. The nursery will be staffed with volunteers from 4 am - 2 am every day. Duties range from bottle-feeding, cage cleaning, food preparation, and socialization. Last year, the nursery saved over 600 lives and they hope to double that number this year. Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization dedicated exclusively to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. When Best Friends began in 1984, around 17 million animals died every year in America's shelters, simply for not having homes. Today, that number is down to about 4 million. That's incredible progress, but it also means that more than 9,000 wonderful dogs and cats are still losing their lives every day. Together, we can change that. For nearly 30 years, Best Friends has been running the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals and building effective programs all across the country that reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the number who find homes. Join us. Together, we can Save Them All.™
