Every year, Best Friends looks for new and innovative ways to reduce the killing of pets in our nation's shelters. One program we recently created in both Los Angeles and Salt Lake City is designed to save some of the most vulnerable — the thousands of kittens under eight weeks old who die in shelters every year ... kittens who are too young to find homes and need 24-hour care. Best Friends kitten nursery program is already making a huge impact in our community, and we're always looking for dedicated volunteers to help Save Them All.
On Saturday, March 22nd, Best Friends Utah opened its brand new kitten nursery in Salt Lake City. The new facility plans to save the lives of 1200 kittens from four local shelters in the Salt Lake valley. Our new Salt Lake facility takes orphaned kittens, as well as nursing adult cats with litters, and cares for them until the kittens reach an adoptable age and weight. In 2013, our pilot nursery saved over 600 kittens.
Together, staff, volunteers and shelter partners will work around the clock to save the lives of thousands of kittens who land in busy Salt Lake City shelters. Most shelter kittens die because there simply aren't the necessary staff and resources. But with the help of dedicated volunteers, this lifesaving program is allowing kittens to grow up and find loving homes. For more information on how to become a nursery volunteer, go to best friends.org/utah.
Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization dedicated exclusively to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. When Best Friends began in 1984, around 17 million animals died every year in America's shelters, simply for not having homes. Today, that number is down to about 4 million. That's incredible progress, but it also means that more than 9,000 wonderful dogs and cats are still losing their lives every day. Together, we can change that. For nearly 30 years, Best Friends has been running the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals and building effective programs all across the country that reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the number who find homes. Join us. Together, we can Save Them All.™
