Violence rocks Barcelona after 500,000 Catalans rally | DW News

There's been another night of violence in the city of Barcelona, as Catalan pro-independence protesters hurled rocks and fireworks at police, who responded with teargas and rubber bullets. Police said some 525,000 people had rallied earlier in the day. The semi-autonomous region of Catalonia has rebuked the Spain's Supreme Court for jailing its separatist leaders on sedition charges over a failed independence bid in 2017. A general strike and the street protests have brought much of the region to a standstill, with severe disruptions in public transportation and blocked roads.
