Spreading Peace & Unity
To spread a message of peace, unity, tolerance and understanding, there aren’t many candidates stranger—or more recognizable—than the United Buddy Bears, an art exhibition featuring over a hundred bear statues made of fibreglass, each painted uniquely to represent each country in the world. After travelling to over 15 countries, the United Buddy Bears reached the shores of Malaysia to promote its message of peace and understanding, exhibiting at Pavilion KL from 8th of December 2011 to 15th of February, 2012.
First created in Berlin, Germany by Klaus and Eva Herlitz in cooperation with sculptor Roman Strobl in 2011, the group of life-sized bear sculptures have since become a well-received ambassador of peace, globe-trotting around the world to bring people of all nations and culture together in a mission of peace.
Each bear, although similar, exhibit distinct characteristics that embody the unique culture, history and traditions of the country they are based after. They are however identical in shape and size, with their hand raised and almost touching the hand of the adjacent bear—a grand message of unity, symbolizing people of all nations, culture and religion coming as one.
The Malaysian exhibition at Pavilion KL also marks an important occasion—the unveiling of the Malaysian Buddy Bear, designed by the famous Malaysian artist Imuda. Launched and revealed by the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail, the Malaysian Buddy Bear sports a friendly smile and various recognizable symbols of Malaysia and was well-received by many members of the public.
