Turkey is marking three years since a failed coup attempt against the government of President Recep Tayip Erdogan. But many questions linger about what actually happened. Were members of the country's armed forces behind the plot? Was the attempt planned by an exiled rival of President Erdogan, whom Turkey considers a terrorist? Some have even suggested Erdogan could have staged the attempted coup himself - as a pretext for consolidating power. While uncertainty remains concerning key aspects of how the attempt was carried out, many of its consequences are now apparent.
