The US Congress launched an impeachment inquiry after a whistleblower complaint alleged President Donald Trump abused his power by trying to acquire political ammunition via Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to help Trump win reelection next year. Among the allegations are that the White House withheld aid to Ukraine to coerce Kiev to cooperate and that the White House tried to hide evidence of that abuse. Trump has alleged that he withheld aid to pressure Germany to provide more aid to Ukraine, and in the transcript of a phone call between Trump and Zelensky, German Chancellor Angela Merkel also makes an appearance.
