I Love Lucy is one of the most enduring and beloved TV shows of all time. But the fame that Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and their co-stars enjoyed came at a cost. Keep watching to discover some tragic details about the I Love Lucy cast.

By 1940, Lucille Ball was a movie star. That year, she starred in Too Many Girls, which is where she met Desi Arnaz. His role in that film was small, but their love for each other was big. The couple eloped shortly after they met, but Arnaz was drafted into the Army soon after. Despite Ball's strong-willed reputation, she often gave in to her husband. As actress Ruta Lee told Closer Weekly in 2017,

"If he wanted something, she would get it for him. If they were seated and he needed more room, she would slide over. I found it surprising because she was such a strong, independent lady."

It's worth noting that Arnaz was already engaged to someone else when he met Ball. And there were other women in the picture as well. Because of his infidelity, in 1944 Ball filed for divorce for the first of multiple times. The couple eventually reconciled, though Arnaz continued cheating. When I Love Lucy was being developed, Ball wisely insisted that Arnaz be cast as her husband in order to keep him close. She later told People Magazine,

"TV started for me just as a means of keeping my husband Desi off the road. He'd been on tour with his band since he got out of the Army, and we were in our 11th year of marriage and wanted to have children."
