This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. With the use of technology, Ryan Barta and Charlie king were able to bring The Ohio State University Marching band, aka, TBDBITL, into the 21st century. Ryan and Charlie talk about the processes that went into and the difficulties faced by bringing something so new to an Ohio State tradition--the marching band. Not only will their idea reduce the marching band's environmental impact, but it will also be a stepping stone for further innovation. The Ohio State University Marching Band also gave a surprise performance at the end of the talk.
Ryan Barta and Charlie King are students at The Ohio State University. Ryan and Charlie marched together in the OSUMB for 3 years as members of T-Row. During this time, they noticed the large amount of paper being wasted by the marching band. Seeking to reduce the paper expense and improve the efficiency of the band, they had the idea to propose the use of iPads.
After months of preparations and countless meetings, they presented the idea to OSU marching band directors, University officials and IT professionals. The idea was a hit and they were able to secure a $25,000 grant thanks to the Ohio State Office of Energy. The project has been a success and is planned to be fully implemented for the 2014 season.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
