George Washington Carver remains the most famous botanist and agriculturalist in American history. The tale learned in schools invariably relates to Carver's innovations with the peanut, and the myriad uses he found for it as America began to produce the crop in excess. However, he didn't even consider this to be his greatest work, having worked at Tuskegee University for many decades — growing plants, conducting scientific inquiry, and teaching hundreds of Black students. By the end of his life, Carver was a global celebrity, but his life was nonetheless marred by racism and prejudice. His legacy resounds in the era of climate change. This is the untold truth of George Washington Carver.
