Located about 20 km north of Taiping is Kampung Batu Kurau , a town that got its name from a stone that resembles a kurau fish ! This 1850s town is today famous for something more spiky ! Its durians ! This video presents the town's famous durian estate owner, one Mr Azlan, and his heritage estate that features 6 durian trees that are over 150 years old ! According to Mr Azlan, Perak has the most number of century old durian trees, but his inherited estate features the oldest, possible in Malaysia. Best of all, these tress are still fruiting every season. Each of these six grand old trees have a personality, and name. There's SUSU, named so because its fruits taste "milky". ICE CREAM, because its fruits taste like ice cream. BIAWAK, because a "biawak"(iguana) always stays there at night. SINTOK, because the medicinal herb sintok breeds nearby. STRAIGHT, because it grows straight up. And, JANTAN, because it's supposedly a male tree ! JANTAN is so old and huge that its circumference measures five adults finger-tip to finger-tip around its trunk.
Mr Azlan practices the traditional way of cultivation, using the seeds rather than bud-grafting. He believes it gives stronger trees and better tasting fruits. His estate today produces many familiar durian species and is often a tourist attraction during the peak durian season.   Even TV stations have covered it.  Watch out for updates on  a durian tasting session on you favourite channel here ! This video is just a tempting teaser to drive your appetite to experience durians from tress that are over 150 years old !!
