When in Batu Pahat, Johore, don't leave town without tasting the number one killer noodles in town! It's name itself is an dead-on attraction. It's called "Mee Racun", literally meaning poison noodles! Don't run away, it's tasty and it doesn't kill ! This unusual local favourite is addictive as its name. Thick yellow noodles are boiled and soaked in a kuali of boiling red hot "chili padi" and lots of other spices. Then added with the most important ingredient : chunks of lamb ! That's the killer when it is ready, all spicy, thick and will definitely get you excited. The most popular stall is in the food arcade along Jalan Sultanah. It's Gerai Mee Racun number 7.8 The story behind this concoction is that the locals wanted to create an alternative and competitor to the famous mee bandung of nearby Muar. ( And they sure did! ) The main difference is the lamb ingredient, compared to the seafood and chicken ingredients of mee bandung. Just ask around the folks of Batu Pahat for food recommendations and surely they would ask you to go taste some "poison noodles" before heading home.
