Camp Phoenix, located in Zambia's Kafue National Park, serves as a sanctuary for orphaned elephants, offering a safe haven of dense forest, open grasslands, and abundant water. Here, young elephants like Chidoba, Chamilandu, and Tafika, who lost their mothers to poaching, are given a second chance at life. Rescued by the Elephant Orphanage Project, these elephants are raised and taught the survival skills needed to eventually join wild herds. In the beginning, they require constant care—feeding every three hours, long walks, and plenty of cleaning. After years of training, they reach an age where they can choose to move beyond the safety of Camp Phoenix into the semi-wild, where the dangers of the wild—such as lions—await. This program follows their journey from near death to eventual freedom, with Tafika facing the ultimate decision of whether to stay with his siblings or venture into the wilderness.
