The COVID-19 pandemic has the world's scientific community researching the origins of the virus, to help prevent future pandemics from happening on such a devastating global scale. But one thing you might find very concerning is just how common it is for viruses that are used for research managing to escape from the labs that study them.
Smallpox, swine flu, SARS, ebola and anthrax have all taken turns breaking out of research facilities one way or another, either infecting people who work in the facilities or leaking out through drainage pipes or improper ventilation. (In one case, a lab even full-on exploded.) This is the disturbing history of viruses escaping from research labs.
