In today’s English lesson you will learn what tag questions are, when to use tag questions, and how to make tag questions. Using tag questions at the end of sentences will really help you to sound natural when you speak English.
There are 6 main rules to remember when using tag questions in English conversation:
Rule 1 for Tag Questions:
If the statement is positive, the tag will be negative. If the statement is negative, the tag will be positive.
Ex: You study English, don’t you? She speaks English, doesn’t she. You don’t like coffee, do you? He isn’t happy, is he?
Rule 2 for Tag Questions:
For Be Verb questions, repeat the Be verb from the statement in the tag.
Ex: You’re a student, aren’t you? She isn’t a teacher, is she?
* The subject I uses “aren’t” in the tag for positive statements.
Ex: I’m giving my presentation today, aren’t I?
Rule 3 for Tag Questions:
Simple present sentences use do or does. Simple past sentences use did.
Ex: You love English, don’t you? He doesn’t have a car, does he? The event didn’t end, did it?
Rule 4 for Tag Questions:
Present perfect sentences use have or has.
Ex: You haven’t been to Japan, have you? She has gotten a new job, hasn’t she?
Rule 5 for Tag Questions:
For sentences using modal auxiliary verbs (can, could, will, must, may, should), repeat the modal auxiliary verb in the tag.
Ex: You can speak English, can’t you. It won’t rain today, will it? He shouldn’t drive so fast, should he?
Rule 6 for Tag Questions:
Tag questions are used in casual spoken English and as a result, should always use contractions in the tag.
Ex: He’s late again, isn’t he? (NOT: He’s late again, is not he?).
If you are writing a tag question, remember to put a comma (,) after the statement before the tag.
Ex: JeN’s Jyugyou is great, isn’t it?
