UNC alumnus Charles Allen has been in the CIA's workforce for over 45 years. He presented the "Security and Freedom in an International World" citing the end of the Cold War, America's current battle with Al Qaeda and how big data has affected freedom and liberty. "How much security do we want? How much privacy do we want? We have to have secrets, it's how to deal with them that's a problem. This is the dilemma we face."

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
