After several years of travelling around Southeast Asia, Kai Riedl began to realize that intercultural communication was being severely limited by the dominant messages of the media and politics. He set out to connect the city of Athens, Georgia to the island country of Java with a medium they both understood: music. By harnessing local creativity and technology, we can connect with other cultures in a more personal way. This talk reminds us that communication starts with a simple "hello."

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
