JalanTuanku Abdul Rahman (formerly Batu Road)
JalanTuanku Abdul Rahman, sometimes referred to as Jalan TARwas the 'grande dame' of KL shopping in the days before modern shopping complexes took the KL metropolitan city by storm. Narrow alleys between the shops offer a fantastic range of clothing material at irresistible bargain prices. Other established names offer collections of silver and crystal ware. Sogo Shopping Complex and Maju Junction Mall are also located along this stretch.
Every Saturday between 5pm- 10pm, LorongTuanku Abdul Rahman is closed to traffic and transformed into a night market (“pasarmalam”) where petty traders and hawkers sell an assortment of goods in the open air. Many of the shops have fitted loud speakers at their entrances to entice customers with their daily promotions.Colourful stools, placed along the road for people to sit on (probably for husbands to relax while their wives go about their shopping…) and enjoy the shade from the trees.
At the junction of the Sogo shopping centre and the row of shop houses there is an ample space where sometimes local musicians or buskers will set up microphones and start entertaining the shopping crowd. One of these local singing champions, the Caliph Buskers use to perform here and occasionally still do from time to time. This venue have also been used as a gathering for politicians to use for their “road shows” as Jalan TAR is mainly a Malay shopping area.
