Repurposing, a Change of View | Sungjae Hwang (황성재) | TEDxKAISTSalon

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. 우리는 일상생활에서 원래의 목적과는 다른 목적으로 자원을 활용하는 "재목적화" 사례를 많이 찾아볼 수 있다. 이러한 점에 착안하여 스마트폰에 있는 센서를 재목적화하여 기존의 기능을 초월한 예시들을 소개한다. 또한 한계를 넘어서기 위해 지금까지 가지고 있던 관점을 넘어서려는 시도의 중요성을 이야기한다.

Numerous examples can be found of reusing existing components for various other uses. Here we introduce several examples where smartphone sensors were rerouted to exceed its original capacity and highlight the importance of challenging convention.

현재 KAIST 문화기술대학원에서 HCI를 연구 중인 황성재 연사는 학술적 가치와 산업적 가치 모두를 만족하는 다양한 연구와 작업을 지속적으로 해오고 있다. 그는 이러한 작업을 통해 다양한 실생활의 문제들을 다학제(Interdisciplinary)적 시각에서 창의적인 방식으로 해결했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 그는 석/박사 기간 동안 카이스트 설립 이래 가장 많은 특허(150여건)와 기술이전(10여건)을 성사시켰고, 특허청장상, 지식경제부 장관상, 교육과학기술부 장관상 등 많은 상을 수상하였다. 그는 학창시절의 낮은 성적에도 불구하고 하나씩 꿈을 이뤄가는 감동 스토리로 많은 사람들의 관심을 받으며 희망을 보여준 주인공이기도 하다. 최근에는 창의적인 기술자와 발명가를 위한 에이전시를 설립하였고, 창조경제문화운동 위촉위원으로도 활동하고 있다. 스스로를 UX발명가로 정의하는 그는 사용자에게 행복을 주는 인간적이며 따뜻한 기기를 꿈꾸며 오늘도 연구와 발명에 매진하고 있다.

"An inventor creating a new user experience by re-inventing the conventional sensor"
Currently researching HCI in Graduate School of Culture Technology, KAIST, he has been performing research that combines academic excellence and industrial value. The common perception is that he addressed and solved everyday problems by adopting an interdisciplinary and creative approach. During his Master's and Ph.D. course he patented 150 patents and 10 technology transfers; the greatest number in KAIST history. He also received JiSeukYoung Award by KIPO(Korean Intellectual Property Office), Minister of Knowledge Economy Prize, and Minister of Science and Technology Prize, among other numerous awards. Despite his success he received very low grade during his high school years and this has inspired others. Recently he has established an agency for inventors and creative engineers and is an active member of committee for Cultural Movement for Creative Economy. He describes himself as a UX inventor and is consistently researching to create a device that give happiness to the users.
