Welcome to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a land of falling lakes and cascading waterfalls, nestled in the mountainous heart of Croatia. As Croatia's oldest and largest national park, and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, Plitvice is a masterpiece of nature, renowned for its chain of 16 terraced lakes joined by spectacular waterfalls. The park's most incredible feature is its unique geology. This is a living, breathing landscape, constantly in a state of creation. The magic lies in a process called travertine formation. Over thousands of years, water flowing over limestone and chalk has deposited a type of rock called tufa, or travertine, creating natural dams that separate the lakes. These dams are alive, growing by about one centimeter per year. The color of the lakes is another of its wonders, constantly changing from azure to green, grey, or blue. These hues are determined by the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. This pristine environment is a sanctuary for a huge diversity of wildlife. Its ancient forests are home to bears, wolves, lynx, and a vast array of rare bird species. For visitors, the park is a place of reverence for nature. A network of wooden boardwalks allows for an intimate experience of the landscape, while strict rules, including a ban on swimming, ensure this fragile ecosystem is preserved for generations to come.
The park also holds a poignant place in modern Croatian history, as it was the site of the "Plitvice Lakes Bloody Easter" incident in March 1991, one of the first armed confrontations of the Croatian War of Independence.
