Welcome to Oslo, the captivating capital of Norway, nestled at the head of the scenic Oslofjord. A city where nature meets urban life, Oslo is known for its stunning fjord setting, abundant green spaces, vibrant cultural scene, and rich maritime history, including Viking heritage. With a population of over 700,000, Oslo is Norway's largest city and its governmental, economic, and cultural heart. Norway is not a member of the European Union. The currency used is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). The official language is Norwegian, but English is exceptionally well-spoken throughout the country. Founded around 1040 by King Harald Hardråde, the original city was devastated by fire in 1624. It was rebuilt nearby and renamed Christiania by King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway. The name reverted to Oslo in 1925. Oslo is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, innovative architecture, world-class museums (like those on the Bygdøy peninsula), and its connection to the Nobel Peace Prize. Consider the Oslo Pass for free public transport and entry to many museums. The city is very walkable, but public transport is efficient. While exploring, try some Norwegian specialties like fresh salmon, "brunost" (brown cheese), or delicious waffles ("vafler"). Norwegians also cherish their outdoor lifestyle, or "friluftsliv."
