The Lilayi Elephant Nursery in Zambia is home to four orphaned elephants, including four-year-olds Musolole and Zambezi, who arrived as traumatized calves after losing their families. Cared for by a dedicated team led by British biologist Rachel Murton, the pair are now ready to graduate to “big school” at Camp Phoenix, a release facility in Kafue National Park. The journey is anything but easy—a 12-hour drive filled with challenges, including coaxing the mischievous duo into a truck, a tire blowout, and a thunderstorm. Once at Camp Phoenix, they meet their new herd, where self-appointed matriarch Chamilandu takes them under her wing. With the support of their new family, these young elephants are on a hopeful path toward rewilding and a brighter future.
