Karen is a doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is an instructor of The Psychology of Women, an undergraduate course at VCU, through which she developed a passion for examining the tough decisions women face when trying to balance career and family. Karen's doctoral dissertation examined one of these issues -- How do women really feel about the ticking of their "biological clocks"? -- with findings relevant to the significant number of women putting off motherhood in their 20s and 30s. Prior to graduate school, Karen worked as a professional journalist at Bloomberg News, National Geographic Channel, and the American Psychological Association's Monitor on Psychology and gradPsych magazines. In her spare time, she swims with the River City Magnolias, a vintage-style water ballet team she founded in 2013.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
